Whether you’re looking for a challenge, amazing natural rock formations, or an easy family trail, these hikes near Adamo Ranch have something for everyone.

Mount Woodson and Potato Chip Rock Trail

Distance: 4.1 miles

Rating: Moderate

Elevation Gain: 1,220 ft

At the peak of Mount Woodson you’ll discover one of the area’s most curious natural attractions. This famous sliver shaped natural rock formation is known as Potato Chip Rock. This moderate 4.1 mile trail is both kid and dog friendly and is good for all skill levels. Once you reach the peak, the views from the ocean and Palomar Mountains are worth the effort! If you choose to hike Potato Chip Rock during the summer make sure to bring plenty of water as temperatures soar during the summer months.

Ramona Grasslands Preserve

Distance: 3.3 miles

Rating: Easy

Elevation Gain: 265 ft

At the Ramona Grasslands Preserve you can explore lush green landscapes and enjoy spotting a variety of rare animals that call the area home. This easy 3.3 mile loop has a slight elevation gain that makes it perfect for any skill level. Ramona Grasslands is a great option for a family hike and offers spectacular wildflowers during the spring and summer seasons. Keep an eye out for a variety of animals that call these grasslands home, including hawks, coyotes and the rare Stephens’ kangaroo rat.

Clevenger Canyon South West Trail

Distance: 4 miles

Rating: Moderate

Elevation Gain: 1,167 ft

This quiet and peaceful, 4 mile, moderate trail is great for most skill levels. The steady incline culminates in a beautiful ridge view at the summit. As a bonus, after the 1,167 ft elevation gain, you’ll be treated to a nice place to rest with chairs where you can site and take in the summit views. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the coast on this gorgeous, dog friendly hike! Bird watchers will love the trail for all of the different species found in Clevenger Canyon including a variety of hawks.

Mount Gower Open Space Preserve

Distance: 9 miles

Rating: Difficult

Elevation Gain: 2,167 ft

For those looking for a challenge, the Mount Gower Open Space Preserve is a perfect day hike for you! On this half day challenging 9 mile trail, you’ll be hiking a rolling ridgeline complete with steep inclines. Once you reach the peak you’ll have great views of the coast. There is a bit of a scramble to the summit, but the views are worth the challenge. Make sure to bring enough water because this trail offers no shade. For a truly beautiful experience, try hiking Mount Gower at sunrise!

Cedar Creek Falls Trail

Distance: 5.6 miles

Rating: Difficult

Elevation Gain: 1,049 ft

The Cedar Creek Falls Trail is a challenging pathway through back country hills, and exposed canyons, all culminating in a beautiful 80 ft waterfall. Located in Cleveland National Forest this hike is not recommended for beginner hikers or those with health conditions. During the summer months, due to extreme heat, there is a higher risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. There is also a permit required to hike Cedar Creek Falls, you can purchase one here. Keep in mind that only 75 permits are issued for this hike per day.
