“Contrary to the archetype, a desert is not defined by the absence of water. The desert landscape is formed by the memory of water.”

Desert X 2023 is free and open to the public from March 4-7, 2023. Visiting hours for the installations are typically sunrise to sunset Monday through Sunday unless otherwise noted. Timed tickets might be required for some installations. The locations of the art installations will be announced on March 4, 2023, but you can find an “in the works” map here

Desert X 2023 is all about water. After all, water flows across states, bodies, and time. This year they are celebrating the interconnectedness of life on our planet and the imagination needed to maintain it.

The structures of survival in these extremes speak not only to the climate crisis and the political and economic migrations that follow in its wake. But also to the physical adaptations of climate.

The artists in the Desert X 2023 exhibition have created instruments of self-awareness that allow you to see the forces of the world. With exhibits explaining how we design our environments, and how we live.  They also focus on the messages we put out in the world that might or might not be beneficial for us.

Curator Diana Campbell explains, “I find it exciting, compelling, and also challenging to address the many histories that make up the changing landscape of the Coachella Valley that has inspired so many people, especially artists, and architects, for such a long time.”
