If you’re new around here, welcome! I’m Kylee and I am an interior styler and property manager specializing in vacation rental properties. I’m most often working on other people’s homes, but during the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge I’ll be making over a room in my own home in Mission Beach (San Diego), CA! Follow along as I transform my three-year-old son’s bedroom over the next few weeks and stay tuned for the final reveal on July 5th!
Way, way back on February 25th (which feels like a lifetime ago!), I officially signed up for the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge. This was my first time joining the event and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. But if I’ve learned anything over the past few months it’s that life throws a lot of curve balls, and participating in the One Room Challenge was no exception. Be sure to read all the way to the end of this blog post to learn about our biggest curve ball yet!
If you’re just tuning in to my ORC journey, you can catch up on past weeks here:

The Before
There can be no ending without a beginning, right? So let’s take a look back at the space before the ORC began. The room itself was recently renovated with the rest of our house last year, but when we switched Nash from a crib to a “big kid bed” that was pretty much all it was.. a big kid bed in a room.

Well, and toys. So many toys. “Hurricane Nash” used to hit Every. Single. Day. It just couldn’t be contained.

The Plan
Tackling this room would have two major parts – the organization and the design. I decided to knock out the organization first. Then the fun of redesigning the space began. I used this mood board and checklist throughout the challenge:

Ok, ok, you’ve been very patient. Ready to see the room?
The Finished Space

Ta-da! I’m so happy with how this room turned out and, most importantly, so is Nash! There are so many fun details in the room that were created just for him.

Let’s start with the accent wall. We purchased 1″ x 2″ x 8′ primed MDF board, for no other reason than it was the least expensive option, and created a pattern on the wall. The moody green paint is Black Bamboo by Behr.

I purchased the wall sconce from Amazon. It’s meant to be hard wired but we had no way of running electrical to this spot, so I used a lighting hack that you can read about here.

These felt baskets under the bed are the primary toy storage in the room. I printed and laminated photos of the contents of each basket which has been SO helpful in getting Nash to help with toy clean up every day!

The planter basket next to the bed is actually a trash can that I had to remove from one of the properties because it was getting water damage from shower spray. A couple of zip ties was all it took to secure it to the turned-upside-down base of a broken plant stand.

The DIY graphic print is one of my favorite parts of the room! I actually made this right before the challenge was postponed. You can learn all about how I created the surfing dinosaur graphic print here.

The closet organization was one of the most impactful changes of the room. And, I’m happy to report, it’s still organized 6 weeks later! We rearranged the clothing racks and drawers so that he could access some things, like his clothes, shoes and large collection of cars and trucks. Messy art supplies and things requiring supervision were moved up and out of his reach.

I think the art display wall is Nash’s favorite part. He is so proud to hang his new creations up on the wall! I love that they can be easily rotated in and out and that the display looks cohesive instead of cluttered.

Switching back to the other side of the room, you can see the step stool that I painted and recovered with woven leather strips. You can also peek at our home-made caterpillar habitat. Steven found a caterpillar while weeding a few weeks back and we created this little glass house for him, feeding him leaves and watching him wiggle around. He’s now all wrapped up in a cocoon and we’re patiently waiting for his butterfly debut!

That’s it for my room reveal, guys, but remember this is a DOUBLE reaveal. Our second big announcement is…… we’re having a baby! Our newest addition will be joining our family in January 2021 and we couldn’t be happier. I broke the news to Steven with this message on the wall right before we painted the accent wall in Nash’s room.

Thank you so much for following along on my very first One Room Challenge journey. It definitely won’t be my last.
