Where to eat in San Diego – Convoy

By Kylee Niederhauser

San Diego’s Convoy neighborhood is a popular destination for foodies seeking some of the best Asian cuisine in the city. With a diverse range of options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide where to grab a bite. Fortunately, we’ve narrowed down our favorite spots for you to indulge in some of the tastiest dishes in the area.

Tajima Ramen

First on our list is Tajima Ramen, a local favorite for traditional Japanese ramen dishes. The restaurant’s cozy interior provides a welcoming atmosphere to sit down and enjoy a steaming bowl of noodles. From the classic Tonkotsu ramen to the vegan-friendly Yasai ramen, there’s a bowl for every taste preference. Tajima also offers a variety of sides and appetizers, including gyoza and karaage chicken. Tajima doesn’t take reservations, so be sure to arrive early (or call ahead to put your name on “the list”), as this popular spot can get quite busy during peak hours.

What we order: Spicy Sesame Ramen, Ebi Miso Ramen

Cross Street Chicken and Beer

Next up is Cross Street Chicken, a casual eatery that serves up some of the best Korean-style fried chicken in the neighborhood. The restaurant’s crispy, juicy chicken wings are a must-try, and we also love their kimchi fried rice. Our kid’s go-to order? Korean Chicken and Waffles. With a laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff, Cross Street Chicken is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite or share a meal with friends.

What we order: Seoul Spicy Wings, Dumplings, Kimchi Fried Rice

Steamy Piggy

For those who love Korean barbecue, Steamy Piggy is a must-visit spot. The restaurant’s tabletop grills allow diners to cook their own meat, creating a fun and interactive dining experience. Steamy Piggy’s all-you-can-eat menu includes a variety of meats, including beef, pork, and chicken, as well as a selection of side dishes such as kimchi and japchae. With affordable prices and generous portions, Steamy Piggy is a great spot for groups and families.

What we order: all the bao options plus soup dumplings

Hidden Fish

If you’re looking for a more upscale dining experience, Hidden Fish is the perfect choice. This sushi restaurant specializes in Omakase, a chef’s choice tasting menu that showcases the freshest seafood available. The menu changes daily based on what’s in season, and the expertly crafted dishes are as beautiful as they are delicious. With an intimate setting and personalized service, Hidden Fish is an ideal spot for a special occasion or a romantic night out.

Somi Somi

For those with a sweet tooth, Somi Somi is a must-visit dessert spot. IMO, no visit to Convoy is complete without a stop at Somi Somi! This Korean-style ice cream shop serves up soft-serve cones filled with flavored custard, topped with a variety of toppings such as cereal flakes and crushed Oreos. Somi Somi’s signature “Ah-Boong” is a fish-shaped waffle cone filled with your choice of custard and toppings. With a rotating selection of seasonal flavors, there’s always something new to try at this popular dessert spot.

What we order: K- Milk Ah-Boong with Coco Pebbles, S- Milk & Ube swirl Ab-Boong with Fruity Pebbles

Realm of the 52 Remedies

Finally, for those looking for a unique and hidden gem, Realm of the 52 Remedies is a must-visit speak-easy-style bar. This cozy bar is tucked away behind a bookcase, adding to the sense of secrecy and exclusivity. The bar’s cocktail menu is inspired by traditional Chinese medicine, with drinks named after different herbs and remedies. The dimly lit atmosphere and creative drinks make Realm of the 52 Remedies a perfect spot for a nightcap or intimate gathering.

In conclusion, Convoy is a foodie’s paradise, with a plethora of delicious and diverse dining options. From traditional ramen to Korean-style fried chicken, there’s something for everyone in this neighborhood. Whether you’re looking for a casual bite or a special occasion splurge, the restaurants listed above are sure to satisfy your cravings. Be sure to save room for dessert!
